The purpose of the Massage Therapy program is to provide the highest quality of therapeutic massages to foster relaxation, healing and recovery from injury and disease, and to assist in the management of pain. We offer treatment to specific areas of the body that may experience discomfort and relaxation massages to help loosen muscles, increase blood flow, and provide relief to the whole body. All of our massage therapists are licensed to practice massage in the state of North Carolina.

The massage therapy studios are located in the back hallway of the UNC Wellness Center between the classroom and the clinical fitness area. Please respect the quiet nature of massage therapy by keeping your voice down when walking past the massage therapy studios.

A variety of massage types are offered. Appointments can be scheduled by calling the front desk at (919)966-5500. If you have questions about a specific treatment or one of our staff therapists, the front desk will ensure that a therapist returns your call within 24 hours. Payment is required upon receiving services, non-members must pre-pay. The UNC Wellness Center does not file insurance claims, but is happy to provide the client with a receipt for services. Please provide at least a 24 hour notice for appointment cancellation. No-shows and cancellations less than 24 hours in advance will be charged the full fee.

Massage therapy is available most days with our NC Certified massage therapists. The following services are offered: Swedish, Deep Tissue, Reflexology, LaStone Therapy, Hot Stone Therapy, Prenatal Massage, Reflexology, Facial Wellness Massage, Medical Massage and Manual Lymph Drainage. See below for a description of services and rates.

Swedish
This traditional massage involves gentle manipulation of the superficial muscle layers. A very relaxing massage; wonderful for improving circulation and flexibility and reducing stress and muscle tension.

Deep Tissue
Chronic patterns of tension in the body are released through slow, deep, stretching strokes and direct pressure to contracted areas. This massage, which is used to treat a wide variety of soft tissue complaints, focuses on deep muscle layers.

Reflexology
A holistic, complimentary therapy involving acupressure to reflex points on the feet, hands and ears. It is based on the theory that stimulation of specific reflex points can dissipate neuro-chemical congestion in the neural pathways between these reflex points and corresponding parts of the body, restoring balance.

LaStone Therapy
This therapy involves the application of heated stones with alternating chilled stones for a deep, penetrating effect on the physiological systems of the body. This "vascular gymnastics" has a cleansing, re-energizing effect. A relaxing treatment that leaves you recharged.

Hot Stone Therapy
This is a deeply relaxing and therapeutic treatment, combining the use of heat and massage techniques. Stones are warmed and gently applied to the body, penetrating through areas of chronic pain or tension and melting away stress.

Pre-Natal Massage
Designed for women in all stages of pregnancy. Wonderful for relieving muscle tension, fatigue, and discomfort specific to pregnancy.

Facial Wellness Massage
(1 1/2 hour treatment) Client Profile Form
Facial Wellness Massage, also known as the Bellanina Facelift Technique, is a luxurious, safe and effective method of facial rejuvenation which treats the problem of sagging, aging skin without surgery. Treatments promote: toning, skin rejuvenation, and symptomatic relief of TMJ Syndrome, sinus problems, and migraines & stress.

Medical Massage
Manual Lymph Drainage

Gentle, rhythmical techniques stimulate the movement of lymphatic fluids in order to cleanse the body of inflammatory materials and toxins. MLD helps remove excess water, protein and wastes from connective tissue through the lymph system which then carries the filtered, purified fluid back into the blood stream. MLD enhances the activity of the immune system, reduces pain, and lowers the activity of the sympathetic nervous system. This is a very effective treatment for lymphedema.
